PROJECT
Turning tourism
from “passing through” into “staying longer.”
This project is being carried out by khb Higashinippon Broadcasting in partnership with CB Co., Ltd. and H.I.S. Co., Ltd., together with Shiogama City, following its selection for a Japan Tourism Agency program promoting regional tourism content to disperse visitor demand.*
The project aims to address the geographic and time-based concentration of tourism demand in Miyagi Prefecture—particularly the heavy focus on Sendai and Matsushima and the limited visitor activity in Shiogama at night. Shiogama lies close to both Sendai City and Matsushima, one of the Three Scenic Views of Japan.
Shiogama is a port town with a rich local culture. It is renowned for “Sanriku Shiogama Higashimono,” premium fresh bigeye tuna prized for its quality, and for its many sushi restaurants serving locally landed seafood. The city is also home to Shiogama Shrine, long revered as a guardian shrine of the Tohoku region and the principal shrine of ancient Mutsu Province, as well as sake breweries with more than 300 years of history and devoted fans across Japan.
By combining these cultural and culinary assets into high-value tours and creating a sea route linking Matsushima and Shiogama, the project seeks to draw international visitors into Shiogama in the evening, encourage longer stays, and generate wider economic benefits across neighboring municipalities through more balanced tourism demand.
